Materiality arising from nutriment

Materiality arising from nutriment (āhāramaya rūpa) can be known through the effects of being hungry or feeling full. When hungry, the body becomes worn out and fatigued. It looks ugly like a burnt tree stump or a crow crouched in a basket full of charcoal. On the other hand, when the body is well fed, it appears bright, soft, smooth, and pleasing to the touch. When a meditator observes these physical phenomena associated with being hungry or being full, he or she understands that the physical phenomena associated with being hungry do not continue into the stage of being full; they disappear while being hungry. The physical phenomena associated with being full do not continue into the stage of being hungry again; they disappear while being full. Therefore, a meditator understands that the physical phenomena generated by nutrition are impermanent, unsatisfactory, and not-self.527

This is how to contemplate physical phenomena in terms of nutrition. It is the third way of contemplating physical phenomena.
